Sleep will always collide with the demands to achieve, produce and progress. It is a period of time that cannot be harnessed for production and thus it innately challenges capitalist ideologies. It is this mechanism which gave rise to a new activism group; The Pillow People.
Although fictitiously conceived, we operated as agents of The Pillow People, mischievously orchestrating events across London. From spiking the Trafalgar square fountains with lavender to marking discarded mattresses with the glow-in-the-dark logo, we started to learn more about our creation by performing it. Through this we discovered that the Pillow People were in fact getting ready for something much bigger.
Performing finally as a group of frenzied conspiracy theorists, we constructed a comprehensive history for the Pillow People, evidenced by historical artefacts and documents. These provided the evidence we needed to speculate at the group’s future; to send the city to sleep, unifying Londoners in a state of unproductivity.
